It all started roughly 20 years ago in a little St Johns kiosk.
Being a trained chef and after spending years in the kitchen, I finally took the leap towards the dream of opening my own wee cafe in 1999. What would later become known as Cigana Roasting Co. sprouted its first roots providing the good folk of Auckland’s eastern suburbs with great tasting coffee and delicious, nutritious foods.
From the beginning, delivering as much value as humanly (and commercially) possible was our mission but it wasn’t until our son was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes that we began to learn and understand more about the whole foods movement as we became ever more intentional about what we put into our bodies.
What felt to us like a small shift in our already nutritious food offerings resulted in a big response as our cafe customers, friends and family caught on and quite quickly, requests for whole foods supplies started to outgrow our cafe walls and Kilo was born.
Now a year into the goodness, our mission has become clearer than ever. Giving Kiwis access to highly nutritional products (without the high price tags) is part of the equation. The other piece of the puzzle involves wider communities benefiting from our combined efforts so that we’re truly delivering good food that does good.
We do this by backing local suppliers where possible, non-profit groups who are doing good in our communities, as well as our partnerships with GPs and nutritionists in the front-lines, helping our people in Aotearoa achieve better health.
So in a nutshell, everything we do, we aim to do it for goodness sake. But nothing significant can ever be done alone.
